For those of you who will be taking my literature course in the coming semester:

We will be analyzing Germanic fairy tales with a focus on the unsanitized works of the Brothers Grimm, in and out of context. Expect detours into history: the political and religious leanings of the time, daily life and culture, etc.

My question to you students is whether you would prefer for the readings to be listed online, or if you would prefer that I distribute actual collections for the readings and reserve the electronic format for assignments.

See, the fact that you even asked has now pegged you as a creature of the Dark Ages. Early Renaissance, at best. Don't you know that everyone around here has had their laptops surgically attached to their... laps?

I try not to assume that everyone has been absorbed by the collective.

So if I complimented you on your broad-minded, cooperative approach in soliciting student feedback on course structure, would you take it as an insult?

I'd be waiting for the knife, yes. And wondering when we're going to give up this ridiculous charade and simply elope to Montreal.

I think you'd have to get past the red haired doctor with the shotgun first. Or were you planning to elope with her as well?

There's medication for that, you know.

You mean the version of Cinderella where the step-mother amputates part of her daughters' feet (heels and toes correct) to try to make the shoe fit?

Along those lines.

That sounds really interesting actually. As far as I know I'm still planning on continuing literature to next semester. I think we have a copy of some of them, but it's old and I don't think dad would appreciate marking it up.

Oh. Yes. I personally would prefer paper-based for the sheer ease of marking. Printouts for highlighting quotes and writing notes in the margins. But maybe you could post them online in a PDF or something so that those who prefer paper have the option of printing them out?

Dude, stupid question, but why don't you just do both? One of my profs does that.

Trying to save trees perhaps? I suppose it would depend on whether he were photocopying the reading material or not. Or maybe cost saving measure? Electronic format would probably save on both.

There's people who prefer to read stuff on their PDAs these days as well, so giving them a paper copy would be pretty useless. Although, there's no reason he couldn't offer both options and just print out paper copies on demand.

This comment brought to you by my need for something to do. Why are anatomy texts so dry? I swear, I opened one the other day and had to start coughing due to all the dust. Well, okay, mostly I was just coughing but I figure dust explains it better then being alergic to the air in my room.

Firstly, not a stupid question.

It comes down to my desire to have everyone literally on the same page during classes, whether we are reading from laptops and print-outs or from textbooks. Aside from that personal indulgence, I have no preference, hence the vote.

Oh, I get you now. Yeah, that makes sense. Someone needs to invent e-books that don't totally suck. And are waterproof.

Oh, I would like to join this class, please.

And I am preferring the books to the computer for the reading, but I must be making the assignments on the computer, because my fingers do not let me write so easily.

That is fine; I am not quite so old-fashioned that I require assignments to be hand-written (besides, quills and vellum are so expensive these days).
